Past crimes and misdemeanours come to the surface in two new crime novels.

The stone fountain in Rainier marks the halfway point between Sydney and Melbourne. Once upon a time, travellers would pull off the highway and stop for lunch in the “cute restaurant”, the pub or the tea shop. Sadly, the time-saving bypass has put paid to all that. Hence tourist operator Lochlan Lewis’ cunning plan to lure punters back with the Ripper Tour, revisiting the site of the three murders that have blighted the town’s reputation and occurred around said fountain.

Meanwhile, the eponymous Ripper is safely locked up in a prison evocatively known as The Tin. By coincidence, this happens to be where former private detective Lane Holland, whom we first met in, is also serving a sentence. Given his undercover nous, the governor wants Lane to do more than clean the bathrooms, and tasks him with buddying up to the dying Ripper to see if he will shed light on one of his former Rainier victims.
