Batman Caped Crusader shot showing the hero breaking through a glass ceiling in Batman: Caped Crusader
Summary The Bat is back in a brand-new animated series, which follows the earliest parts of The Dark Knight's career in Batman: Caped Crusader. Batman: Caped Crusader is set as a spiritual successor to Batman: The Animated Series, but that doesn't mean the show is built like the 1990s classic. The popular DC hero has appeared in plenty of animated shows and films in recent years, including Batman Unlimited and Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham.
1 Batman: Caped Crusader Returns To The Superhero's Roots... With A Twist Close Batman was first introduced to the world in 1939. Originally, the detective was simply a wealthy socialite who had an alter ego that would operate like a Private Investigator. He would seek out crime, and deliver vigilante justice. Since then, the character has evolved to also be a tech whiz, with his wealth affording him the opportunity to use cutting edge technology to aid in his efforts.
Despite the lack of tech, the animated series also makes a conscious effort to update the story in several ways. Familiar characters have been adapted and changed to reflect greater diversity. This is a solid way to take the best of the Batman stories and still connect it to the modern era, making it engaging and representative. It's an exciting prospect, and it's executed rather seamlessly.
Batman: Caped Crusader Doesn't Show Enough Batman Close However, this does lead to one significant problem for a Batman TV show: There isn't enough Batman. The shifting focus is great for expanding the story of Gotham, and developing a rich variety of characters, but it does somewhat distract from the titular hero. Batman is not really the core focus of his own show. Instead, Caped Crusader casts Gotham as the central lead, and follows the adjacent characters to build out their story.
