The Mavericks' historic training camp journey to Abu Dhabi and Madrid will cover 16,500 miles (round-trip) and more than 32 hours of combined flight time.

“I think it’s a great experience, a great time for the team to bond,” Kidd said Saturday, following his team’s bon voyage practice at the Mavericks’ Design District training facility. “Fourteen hours on a plane, so we’ve got some time to get to know one another.”Advertisement

“I’ve been thinking about this game since they told me we were going to play there,” Doncic said. “That game is going to mean a lot to me.“I was raised there. I was trying to learn how to speak there, English, Spanish. Well, everything. I learned how to play basketball. That’s my second home for sure, so I’m very excited to be back.”The 43-year-old Mavericks franchise is no stranger to international play.

The game at Real Madrid won’t be the first time Dallas has faced a club team. In 2018 the Mavericks hosted the Beijing Ducks. And on October 6, 2012, Dallas beat Alba Berlin in a Berlin homecoming for Dirk Nowitzki; three days later the Mavericks fell to FC Barcelona in Barcelona. This trip, however, is believed to be the first time an NBA team has played as many as three preseason games against both NBA and club competition, on two continents .

After Irving got traded to Dallas last February, he cited the need to get to know Doncic and other new teammates off-the-court, but by that point of the season home stands and road trips are a blur and there’s barely time for practices, much less quality off-the-court time.“This is what I was talking about last year,” Irving said. “We’ve got to get out and get to know one another on different [levels], in different environments.“I feel like we get a chance to do that overseas.
