The customer is not always right. This new system for restaurants protects workers from sexual harassment:

Americans work in restaurants. And at the helm of the industry, powerful and problematic men come to mind — with the likes of Mario Batali, Ken Friedman, and John Besh. The #MeToo movement has encouraged victims in the industry to speak out against their harassers, but its focus has been on internal conflicts within restaurant staffs. The prevalence of customers sexually harassing restaurant workers has been largely overlooked.

There is no power bestowed onto the customer just because they are offering their money to a restaurant. Similarly, service professionals are not stripped of their rights when they clock-in. They should be helped to feel safe in their workplace. This is the mission of Not On The Menu. Red denotes when an aggressor is being repetitive in orange behavior or has escalated to overtly sexual comments or touching. Red behavior is not tolerable and the offending customer is asked to leave the restaurant. Not On The Menu provides a script managers may use in this scenario.

The same language — yellow, orange, and red — can be applied to other types of harassment. Wade said that they most often use the terminology to describe"jerks" or"hangry people". Whether it is used for just inconsiderate diners or discriminatory or sexual harassers, Wade's system provides a plan of action to halt their behavior.
