TheCrown Season 5 Review: A Weaker Season Still Yields Excellent Performances
In late 2020, the fourth season of Netflix's hit prestige drama The Crown reached a new level of buzz as it introduced a pair of notable British figures and began to tackle the modern age. Now, The Crown enters a new, more controversial era with season 5, and to say that expectations are high is possibly an understatement. Much has already been said about the final two seasons of this series, with it sparking new debates over its fictionalized approach to the royal family.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY The Crown season 5 begins not with its new cast, but with a welcome returning performer, whose presence reminds viewers of how far the show has come as a television series and as a historical recounting. From there, it jumps to the 1990s, as Queen Elizabeth II faces growing discontent with the monarchy and the disintegration of her children's marriages.
In its recreation of a decade now gone, The Crown remains an incredibly well-made piece of television. From Martin Childs' production design to Amy Roberts' costumes , the series is almost guaranteed to have a presence on the awards circuit when it comes to its production. The score by a returning Martin Phipps features some familiar themes from past seasons, yet goes a long way in ratcheting up the tension that continues to brew amid the royal family.
Later on, The Crown gives a lot of screentime to Diana's controversial 1995 Panorama interview, which was secured through dishonest means. While this is undoubtedly a major moment that deserves special focus, the lead-up to the interview puts a lot of emphasis on the BBC's role as a British institution, which ties into Queen Elizabeth's acquisition of satellite television.
Coming off the high that was its Diana-and-Thatcher season 4, The Crown struggles in finding its footing amid the monarchy's most controversial period yet. With perhaps the most divisive event — Diana's death — still to come, it will be very interesting to see how Morgan and the creative team handle the closing chapter in this saga. The Crown season 5 is far from a failure, but it isn't quite the best the series has ever been.
