Vusi Mona | As it stands, road safety remains a topic that is both emotive and urgent in South Africa. With an estimated road accident death rate of 25 deaths per 100 000 people, there is no question that road safety needs to be prioritised
As our population grows and traffic increases, infrastructure in the form of both new and upgraded roads is a key determinant in the upliftment and growth of the economy. Improved rail, port and information technology infrastructure are desperately needed to reduce congestion on the roads and improve safety for all users.
In recent weeks alone, there have been numerous large crashes across all provinces, with a tragically high number of fatalities. There are more than 800 000 road accidents in South Africa every year, translating to roughly 2 200 crashes on our country’s roads daily. These statistics underscore just how severe the impact of road safety is on both the population and the economy.
The current state of road safety in our country is intolerable. Through combined efforts and collaboration, it is essential that we work to reduce the number of crashes, deaths and injuries on our roads.A sharper focus on pedestrian and driver behaviour, together with the development of a safer road environment, are among the steps we need to take.
Sanral identifies and addresses high-incident areas, where, in many cases, solutions require close partnerships with education and traffic law enforcement entities to achieve a safer road environment. Pedestrian accessibility and mobility are also promoted with appropriate infrastructure, which can include pedestrian and bicycle paths, traffic-calming measures , pedestrian bridges and safely located public transport hubs.
