It might have felt like the shortest Mariners offseason. Spoiler alert, because it was.

Remember, the Mariners advanced further than they ever had in team history before by advancing to Game 7 of the American League Championship Series, which means the offseason was as short as it had ever been.
A feeling that was compounded by all that's happened since that fateful Game 7 loss, including a Seahawks Super Bowl and the news that the Sonics may be on their way back.The M's enter 2026 with high hopes, especially after all the aforementioned success of last year. And they plan to kick off the new year with one of their most reliable arms on the mound.Logan Gilbert gets the call to throw the first pitch of the season, marking the second straight season that Gilbert leads the way to start a new season.In all reality, it's another bit of proof that the Mariners have one of the deepest rotations in baseball. In fact, before Gilbert was the Opening Day starter in 2025, Luis Castillo earned the honor in 2023 and 2024. Certainly, Bryan Woo, George Kirby and Bryce Miller are all capable of doing so as well. The Mariners may be running it back with Gilbert but this will be a slightly different team than we saw in 2025. Gone are fan favorites who had clutch playoff moments like Eugenio Suarez and Jorge Polanco but in are players who should make a major impact and perhaps improve this team with high-leverage reliever Jose Ferrer and all-star infielder Brendan Donovan. With those moves, the young infield prospects the Ms love from Cole Young to Colt Emerson and Ryan Bliss---not to mention the contributions of Leo Rivas should all get ample opportunities.The 2025 season set up 2026 to be one to remember. A campaign that will solidify this as a new renaissance or golden era of M's baseball, should it all go right.There's no denying that Opening Day feels like a holiday across the country, a sort of feeling that all is right again with baseball being played.We just hope it's one that's celebrated all the way through October and into November.
