, Nancy Messonnier, the director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the CDC, confirmed that all five infected U.S.-based patients had previously traveled to Wuhan.across 36 states are under the CDC’s investigation related to the virus. In addition to the five positive cases, 68 have come back negative and 92 tests are pending as of Thursday morning. Messonnier described the risk of outbreak in the U.S. as “low” during a recent press conference.
“At this time in the United States, '2019 novel coronavirus' is not spreading in our communities,” she said, according to NPR., Thailand has reported 14 cases of infection and Hong Kong has reported 10. Taiwan, Australia, and Macau have each reported five positive cases of the infection. Singapore, Germany, the United Arab Emirates, Cambodia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Nepal, France, Canada, Tibet, and Vietnam have all reported less than five cases each.
“Our greatest concern is the potential for this virus to spread to countries with weaker health systems which are ill-prepared to deal with it," WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus . “This declaration is not a vote of non-confidence in China...on the contrary, WHO continues to have the confidence in China’s capacity to control the outbreak.”
