This critic’s personal favorite of the films in the series — and one of my favorite films of the ‘90s, period — is “,” screening on Sunday, June 9. Gus Van Sant’s anarchic 1991 adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Henry IV” stars River Phoenix andas Portland street hustlers turning tricks between iambic pentameter soliloquies and absurdist comic interludes that just barely stave off the film’s ineffable sadness.
