Mexico’s rugged Margarito – for all of his punch resistance, range and size – was expected to routinely become Cotto’s latest victim at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand when they met on July 26, and yet what unfolded was not only one of the fights of the year, but perhaps the most controversial of its era. Every punch Margarito threw appeared to hurt the brave Cotto, who was also starting to bleed. By the conclusion of the 10th the momentum of an even fight was with the Mexican, and in the 11th, again under pressure, Cotto was forced to take a knee. When the fight resumed and Margarito again marched towards him, punches hadn’t been exchanged when Cotto again took a knee.
Before they made their way to the ring that night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Margarito was discovered by Mosley’s trainer Nazim Richardson – who had made a similar discovery before Felix Trinidad lost toin September 2001 – wearing doctored hand wraps. Margarito was reported, his hand wraps were changed, and the explosive Mosley proceeded to inflict a one-sided defeat that concluded when he stopped the Mexican in the ninth round.
