Patrick Wilson red carpet picture
Before Patrick Wilson played Ed Warren in The Conjuring, he starred in yet another family-haunting horror series that began with 2010's Insidious. In the first two movies, Josh Lambert and his family are haunted by the spirits of the Further, a foggy netherworld that can be reached through astral projection.
The entries afterward were prequels that focused on the trio who helped the Lamberts, Elise , Specs , and Tucker . So, there was cause for excitement among fans when the original cast would return for a fourth sequel. Patrick Wilson wouldn't just be haunted again; 2023's The Red Door would mark his directorial debut. It had all the makings of a legacy sequel that would please the fans, and the reunion on-screen likely helped it earn the highest-grossing opening of the franchise. Although it was a departure from previous sequels, there is still something to enjoy about what Patrick Wilson did with the horror franchise. ‘The Red Door’ Is a Change of Pace for the Insidious Franchise At the end of Chapter 2, Josh and his oldest son, Dalton , try to suppress their astral projection gift to cut them off from the Further as well as their memories of it. The Red Door takes place nine years later, where their decision has led to unforeseen consequences. Josh is divorced from Renai , and suffering from memory problems, he's become distant from his children. Dalton isn't doing better. Away at college, he feels his family has kept a secret from him, not what it is. Soon, both father and son experience supernatural phenomena, and the broken Lambert family will have to come together to protect themselves from the Further once more. Unlike other installments that wanted to get your nerves rattled from the get-go, the opening scene of The Red Door does something different. Replacing composer Joseph Bishara's aggressive, screeching score that was prominent in the past entries, there is an unbearable quietness as the camera stays on Josh sitting in his car, waiting for a text from Dalton. He's unaware that a figure is approaching his car, the blurry shape getting closer through the rear window. It might trigger flashbacks to the best scares in the Insidious franchise, especially the first movie's moment where the Lipstick-Face Demon pops out behind Josh. However, when the opening scene ends with the figure disappearing and Josh driving off, it's not a fake-out. It's all about misdirection, similar to the classic Lipstick-Face Demon scare. Back in the first installment, the audience is focused on Josh's mother, Lorraine , as she recalls a dream she had about Dalton. Audiences were tricked into believing the monster would be contained in her memory. Then it suddenly appears behind Josh in the real world. Lorraine screams, and everyone watching the movie is screaming too. The misdirection in Wilson's opening scene lets the viewer do all the worrying for Josh. There will be jump scares, but The Red Door has the supernatural horror secondary to exploring how fractured the Lamberts have become. Patrick Wilson Crafts Some Great Scares in 'Insidious: The Red Door' The screenplay by Scott Teems doesn't shy away from the emotional pain the Lamberts family is going through. Renai gives Josh a hug that doesn't look quick enough for her; a fight between Josh and Dalton ends a move-in trip to college on a sour note. The familiarity that fans will have with the Lamberts certainly helps these scenes hit harder, and Patrick Wilson's performance as Josh is brutally laid bare. Even whilt starring in the horror film, Wilson's directing never loses its grip, esecially when he finally unleashes jump scares that are effective due to how he uses silence. One of the film's terrifying highlights involves an MRI scan that traps Josh inside, with a sense of claustrophobia that doesn't let up for two minutes as the camera reveals through different angles that a spirit is snug inside with him. Josh's panicked breathing scores the scene, ending with the spirit crawling toward him like a hungry animal. A later scare is a callback to the opening with the return of the mysterious figure. Josh plays a memory game in his house with pictures on a window, letting the audience glimpse the figure standing outside, until it rushes through the glass. Wilson said in an interview with Collider that he"fought for that over and over, even though I was kind of told, 'You should do this at night, he shouldn't come through the window,' all this kind of stuff." There are other jump scares, but the MRI scene and the memory game are well-executed to show how unsafe the real world is becoming for Josh. Wilson favors capturing the psychological fallout of the family's secrets, even though it comes at the expense of the mythology of the Further. Patrick Wilson's Directorial Debut Is a Promising Start for the Actor The comedy in the movie is largely saved for the college scenes with Dalton and his roommate Chris , when the comic relief has been the duty of the bickering duo, Tucker and Specs, in the past Insidious films. Those two, as well as Elise, were important characters in Insidious, which makes their small cameos in The Red Door feel lackluster. Story-wise, it makes sense given that Dalton and Josh don't remember them. But there are no advancements to the Further either, a deviation from how the series previously explored the setting in the past. Scenes in the Lipstick-Face Demon's lair are creepy, yet they are over too soon. Patrick Wilson should take on an original project next that doesn't carry franchise baggage, seeing that his direction is strongest when focusing on family trauma. While it appears that the actor's time with the Conjuring franchise is over, his return to Insidious as both the star and director was a nice way for him to leave his mark on one of the biggest horror franchises. And who doesn't want to listen to him sing with the band Ghost over the end credits?
