Sheena Cruickshank, Professor in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Manchester said that inflammation is the one common side-effect which explains why these groups become so unwell with the virus.Prof Cruickshank said risks associated with diabetes, obesity, age and sex are all related to the immune system functioning irregularly when confronted by the virus.
"When properly controlled, these cells are a force for good that can detect and destroy threats, clear and repair damaged tissue, and bring in other immune cells to help", she added.Prof Cruickshank said that glucose fuels damage and if diabetes is not controlled well, then this can lead to high levels of glucose in the system.
"Once the virus is safely inside these cells, it causes them to start making lots of inflammatory cytokines – effectively kick-starting the cytokine storm." Men are more likely to develop atypical monocytes, that cause cytokines - and in turn leads to cytokine storms, which cause severe inflammation.
