The tradition of wearing a carnation on Mother's Day has all but disappeared in San Antonio.
Before I understood this Mother’s Day custom, I was among the children of St. Maria Goretti on the West Side who wore carnations on our lapels in honor of our mothers. Parishioners packed the chapel, long ago replaced with a parking lot and flea market. Everyone wore the under-appreciated flower. Some red, some white. It was devastating when I found out the significance.
