There’s a new cocktail bar taking residency at Mackie Mayor
Manchester’s constantly evolving bar scene has long been the envy of fellow Northern cities, but in recent years it’s also caught attention from further afield. In May, Schofield’s on Little Quay Street was named the best bar in the UK, while four of the five nominees in the Best Bar in the North category hailed from Manchester.
Opening this weekend, Stray takes on the corner plot of Mackie Mayor, the food hall that was recently called ‘exceptional’ and named the best in the UK. Taking up the unit formerly occupied by Atkinsons Coffee on Eagle Street, they’ll be bringing their own take on some well-known cocktails. Ben, who has been in the industry for over a decade both behind bars and on the development side, is steering the drinks concept and has devised a launch menu of ‘uncomplicated, well executed’ cocktails. As he explains: “For me, it’s a less is more approach, and we’ll be constantly evolving the menu and switching things up.”
Other specialities include the Drink of Two Halves, a carbonate house negroni with a white lady float, the fig leaf pisco sour, and Yujo, which is made with Takamaka Koko Rum, Banhez Mezcal, pineapple, yuzu sake, white rice syrup and prosecco. They also offer a range of classics like the Negroni, Mai Tai and Espresso Martini, which diners seated in Mackie Mayor’s main food hall can have ordered to their table.
