The Church of England may dismiss us but we LGBT reverends will always make you welcome 💬 via ipaperviews

Over the past six years the Church of England has been in discussion about whether to allow same-sex marriages to be conducted within their churches. It has been a painful and frustrating process for many, but particularly those who are part of the LGBTQIA+ community, which includes me.

I’m one of the lucky ones. I’m part an amazing group of inclusive churches in Manchester, where I am serving in my first year of curacy. Our churches have seen a radical shift in inclusion over the past few years. My sexuality has never been an issue here, but sadly this hasn’t always been the case. The church I grew up in as a teenager told me to not act on my feelings, otherwise I wouldn’t be allowed to continue serving. Their reasoning for this was that my involvement as a reverend meant I was in a position of leadership, and that I had a responsibility to uphold the teachings of the Church.

This document has been a great source of pain, specifically to queer clergy. In it we are referred to as “homophiles”, which I know many of my fellow colleagues find incredibly offensive. It’s also repeated multiple times that same-sex relationships are not equal to heterosexual relationships; a hurtful statement to make to those who are in long term, faithful and committed same-sex relationships.

There hasn’t been an official update released yet, nor any indication when we can expect this, but my hope is that clergy who are in life long faithful partnerships, will no longer be required to be celibate. I also hope there will be the recognition thatFor me personally, and the churches I serve, the decision to not to allow same-sex marriage will not change our day to day. We already have many LGBTQIA+ people across multiple of our congregations.
