What if eating oats were enough to mimic certain drugs designed to combat obesity and diabetes?
A new study led by Frank Duca, Associate Professor in the Department of Animal and Biomedical Sciences at the University of Arizona, suggests that eating foods rich in beta-glucan, a type of fibre found in oats and barley, can reduce body weight and obesity. The study, published in The Journal of Nutrition, analysed the impact of different fibres on the intestinal microbiota - the community of tiny microbes living in the digestive system and responsible for breaking down the food we eat.
Only beta-glucan led to a reduction in body weight and fat, as well as an improvement in glucose homeostasis. Beta-glucan is a unique fibre found in many foods, including oats, barley, mushrooms and yeast. Butyrate is an essential source of fuel for colon cells, promoting a healthy intestinal barrier to reduce systemic inflammation. Butyrate also induces the release of intestinal peptides, or messengers that regulate gut function, such as glucagon-like peptide-1, or GLP-1.
