A new study reveals CEOs are embracing AI, but struggle with long-term vision and cultural adaptation. A more participative approach, where employees are empowered to leverage AI effectively, is shown to yield greater success.
The increasing use of AI in business has sparked a debate about the optimal level of CEO and leadership involvement in its day-to-day implementation. While AI offers valuable tools for strategic guidance and summarizing vast amounts of data, there are concerns about whether leaders are fully prepared for its transformative effects and whether their corporate culture s can effectively embrace AI.
A recent study conducted by Kearney and The Futurum Group surveyed over 200 CEOs of large companies to gauge their perspectives on AI. The study revealed that top executives are generally open to exploring AI's potential, with those who see the highest returns being those who delegate day-to-day tasks to their employees, allowing them to leverage AI effectively. However, the study also highlighted that short-term thinking and a lack of clear success metrics are hindering AI adoption in many organizations. Although 78% of leaders express confidence in capturing value from AI, success rates are higher in companies where executives relinquish direct oversight. In high-performing firms, only 59% of CEOs maintain direct control compared to 92% in less successful organizations. This suggests a pattern that aligns with previous technology-driven initiatives, where top-down implementation often results in costly and ineffective solutions. A more participative approach, where employees are empowered to experiment with, recommend, and adopt AI tools relevant to their roles, appears to yield greater rewards. Simultaneously, executives must provide the vision and strategic direction to unlock AI's transformative potential. While 80% of leaders express at least moderate confidence in extracting measurable value from AI, only 19% actively position AI for transformative growth rather than immediate gains. The focus on quick wins through problem-solving overshadows higher-value opportunities like workforce transformation and business model innovation. This paradox, as highlighted by the study's co-authors, underscores the need for a balanced approach where short-term gains are pursued without neglecting the long-term strategic vision. Digital-native companies are demonstrating a more proactive approach by prioritizing strategic roadmaps, data readiness, and skilled AI talent acquisition. Mature organizations, on the other hand, are emphasizing sustained viability and internal alignment, reflecting a longer-term perspective that incorporates total cost of ownership and historical data migrations.
