Austin Butler, Baz Luhrmann, Catherine Martin, Priscilla Presley, Olivia DeJonge, Kacey Musgraves, and Kelvin Harrison Jr. all showed up on the MetGala re carpet in looks by Miuccia Prada.
What’s more American than Elvis Presley? Apple pie, perhaps, but it’s a tough call. So it felt fitting that for the Met Gala 2022’s red carpet, which celebrates the gilded glamour of classic American style, the team behind Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming biopic of the “King of Rock and Roll” all wore coordinating looks that paid tribute to the legendary musician’s love for bling. Their Prada ensembles—most of which were accentuated with colored stones—were singularly sophisticated.
Austin Butler, Luhrmann, Catherine Martin, Priscilla Presley, Olivia DeJonge, Kacey Musgraves, and Kelvin Harrison Jr. all showed up on the carpet in looks by Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons. Butler, who plays the titular character, led the pack in a custom black kid mohair bolero jacket and trousers with a black satin scarf and black shoes. DeJonge, who plays Priscilla, wore a custom silk satin strapless gown with a bow train, embroidered head-to-toe in green starbursts.
But it was Luhrmann who arguably channeled Elvis’s later-in-life maximalist style most vividly, his custom black mohair jacket with a dramatic collar and red embroidery being more than worthy of the King. His wife, Martin, who is the costume designer for, wore a sophisticated top and trousers that were also embroidered. Alton Mason, who plays Little Richard, wore a bedazzled cape.
Given the playful fashion spectacle we expect from the Met Gala red carpet, it’s rare to see an entire cast coordinate. But it certainly has people talking about, both the person and the movie. At the top of The Met steps, the crew stopped to speak with host La La Anthony. Luhrmann told her that he had just finished editing the film yesterday, and Priscilla said she hoped that the film would introduce a new generation to her former husband.
