We all knew she was frail. We knew she was a very great age. But hey, she was our indomitable Queen. She was always there, wasn’t she? So of course she made it to the Palace balcony for the Jubilee celebrations; she even had tea with Paddington Bear. And of course she was there to perform her constitutional duty of ushering Boris Johnson out and Liz Truss in .For the Queen it was mercifully swift. For the nation it was a seismic shock.
Suddenly, all the names changed. How strange it seemed to say “King Charles” . Thanks to the Queen’s timely intervention earlier in the year, Camilla became Queen Consort without further debate, and – something I hadn’t quite thought through – we had a new Prince and Princess of Wales, in William and Catherine.
The seamless transition from one monarch to the next – “The Queen is dead. Long live the King” – made a mockery of the years of argument about whether Charles should succede his mother. And in his first address as King, he certainly looked and sounded the part, solemnly pledging “throughout the remaining time God grants me, to uphold the constitutional principles at the heart of our nation”.
