Beginning in 2027, Cape Town becomes the eighth Major.
The World Marathon Majors are officially getting bigger, and this time, the series is adding an entirely new continent to the map. The Cape Town Marathon has been added to the series beginning in 2027, making it the eighth World Marathon Major and giving runners a new global finish line to chase.
The 2027 race is scheduled for May 23. Sydney was added in 2024 to make it seven. Cape Town’s addition changes that map by expanding the series into Africa, giving it its first race in the group.after severe overnight winds, cutting short a key moment in its attempt to earn Major status. At the time, the World Marathon Majors said it understood the disappointment for runners, volunteers, organizers, and the city.
According to the World Marathon Majors , the race completed the evaluation process after its 2026 event, clearing the way to join the series in 2027. CEO Dawna Stone welcomed Cape Town into the group, saying in the announcement, “It gives me huge pleasure to welcome Cape Town to the family.
” Stone also said Cape Town would bring “a whole new dimension” to the series, pointing to “the unique culture, the welcome from the people of the city and the wonderful setting Cape Town provides. ” Clark Gardner, CEO of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, went on to call the Major status “a profound honor” and said the moment belongs to “everyone who carried us here.
” “We are proud to take our place among the world’s greatest marathons, and we look forward to welcoming the global running community to Cape Town in 2027,” Gardner said. There’s also good news for runners who raced Cape Town in 2026: WMM said all 2026 finishers received a provisional star toward their Majors journey, and those stars will be fully upgraded in the coming weeks.
As for the original Six Star medal, it’s staying put for runners in the midst of completing the original six Majors, but the series is now moving toward a future Nine Star medal as the calendar continues to grow.
