Over 1,400 South African businesses have been liquidated in 2022 so far, with 170 more recorded in September, data from Statistics South Africa shows.

The total number of liquidations increased by 11.8% in September 2022 compared with September 2021, and the total number of liquidations increased by 2.1% in the third quarter of 2022 compared with the third quarter of 2021.A decrease of 3.7% was recorded in the first nine months of 2022 compared with the first nine months of 2021 .

Data published on Monday from the tourism sector shows a shifting trend, however, with revenue generated from the sector on a path to recovery following two years of stunted operations. Income from accommodation increased by 80.3% year-on-year in August 2022, the result of a 54% increase in the number of stay unit nights sold and a 17.1% increase in the average income per stay unit night sold.

Income from accommodation increased by 89.5% in the three months ended August 2022 compared with the three months ended August 2021. The main contributors to this increase were hotels and ‘other’ accommodation .

South African Govt Outlines Actions Taken In Corruption ProbeSouth African Govt Outlines Actions Taken In Corruption ProbePresident Cyril Ramaphosa has announced actions taken by the government  against those implicated by the State Capture Commission of Inquiry, for benefiting from corruption. In a televised address on October 23, 2022 the president said state capture was a "crime against the people of South Africa". Meanwhile opposition party, the Democratic Alliance, has slammed Ramaphosa's response as a means to "buy time" before the African National Congress's elective conference in December 2022, in which the president faces an uphill battle to maintain his position. Former public protector Thuli Madonsela in November 2016, recommended that a commission be established to probe findings made in her "State of Capture" report. The initial report from the Zondo Commission sent shockwaves from an 87-page examination of how former president Jacob Zuma and his accomplices captured the South African Revenue Service. The report recommended prosecution against former high-ranking lawmakers and their public and private sector affiliates. The commission also called for greater protection of whistleblowers and the establishment of a single, multifunctional, properly resourced and independent anti-corruption authority by the government, with a mandate to "confront the abuses inherent in the present system".
