Brendon McCullum would no doubt have liked Jessop, the swashbuckling batter and keen golfer who played off scratch, even if his record is starting to distract England's players
Yet in England’s brave new world, it appears only a matter of time before the milestone Jessop set just 18 months after the reign of Queen Victoria ended is overhauled by someone in this ridiculously talented squad.
Stokes, in an interview on the eve of this two-Test series where he insisted his team were not driven by records, admitted he had no idea who Jessop was. “I was aware,” he said. “Obviously, I need to get that out the back of my mind and concentrate on getting to a 100. It’s disappointing but like I said before I’d have bitten your hand off for an 80 again.”
McCullum, whose team made good use of the pink ball under lights to reduce New Zealand to 37 for 3 by stumps, would no doubt have liked Jessop.
