Jim Richter, known to many as the"Broom Guy," talks about selling brooms in Indianapolis and how no longer being able to sell on post office property has affected him, at his home, in Lawrence, Ind., Friday, April 1, 2016.Anyone who's been to the post offices on Indianapolis' north side likely have seen him, met him, remembered him, become friends with him.
Jim Richter learned how to make brooms at the Indiana School for the Blind and spent the next several decades selling his creations outside post offices on the north side, not far from his home. In recent years, he bought his brooms from an agency that helps the blind, rather than making them himself.
He's always been amazed at what his dad could do despite being blind. Andy Richter remembers being a young boy and working on a car with his dad, who showed him how to change oil and fix the brakes. Cohen said he first met Richter in the 1980s. He and his family often stopped by to chat with Richter whenever they saw him at one of his usual spots.
