While The Boys’ Billy Butcher has made it perfectly clear in both the live action and comic book series that his main goal is to eradicate supes, especially Homelander, he secretly has an enhancement himself that makes him stronger than most of the superhumans he faces. The Boys’ supes get their power from Compound V, a serum that is widely unpredictable but offers those who take it some type of superpower.
Unlike the Amazon Prime original series, the Boys are aware from the beginning that Compound V is how supes are made, and they use that information to their advantage in taking them down. In The Boys #4 by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, fans are shown for the first time that Compound V is used by the members of the Boys to fight supes hand-to-hand. The version of Compound V Butcher and the Boys use only gives them powers for a short time and only offers them the power of super strength.
Butcher doesn’t get his hands on this specific strain of Compound V by accident but by his own ruthless design. Before Butcher met Hughie and launched the Boys as fans know the team, he was working for Greg Mallory, the founder of the Boys. Under Mallory’s employ, Butcher tracked down the scientist responsible for creating Compound V and forced him to create a specific version of the serum, one that makes him stronger than practically everyone he faces.
While the comics are very specific about the fact that Butcher’s only superpower when he takes the V is super strength, it seems as though the live-action series is taking some liberties. In the preview for The Boys season 3, Butcher is shown exhibiting superpowers for the first time, powers that include laser vision.
