The Boogeyman is based on the 1978 short story by the same name, which legendary author Stephen King wrote. The film initially entered production in 2018 with Scott Beck and Bryan Woods attached to write the project for 20th Century Fox's release.
Disney's acquisition of the studio in 2019 and the accompanied switch to 20th Century Studios halted production. The film was revived in 2021, though, when Rob Savage signed on to direct a screenplay from Mark Heyman that was heavily influenced by Beck and Woods' previous work.The trailer for the highly-anticipated 2023 horror film premiered live on Fox during halftime of the NFL's NFC Championship game between the San Francisco 49ers and the top-seeded Philadelphia Eagles.
