The Black List has launched another venture to discover and support aspiring storytellers from underrepresented backgrounds.

“We know that that model works,” says Leonard. “It’s a model that also allows people who might be financing a feature film to make responsible investing decisions. If you know the script is good because it’s been validated by someone like us, that’s a good thing. If you can see the short film from a first-time filmmaker and say, ‘Oh, okay, this is what I’m investing in. I will get something like this,’ that’s a very compelling case to make.

The collaboration with UPS materialized after a representative for the shipping company sent an email to the Black List’s customer support team—thoughthe executive vice president and chief marketing officer at UPS, chuckles to hear that, as he hadn’t quite realized that was how the conversation began. UPS had previously done collaborations in the fashion, sports, and music worlds to support small businesses, he says, and journeying into film felt like a natural next step.

The project is specifically seeking underrepresented filmmakers, though it doesn’t explicitly state any specific criteria beyond that. “It’s quite broad,” Leonard says. “We’re not looking to exclude folks.

“Once we add the UPS partnership, there will be about $370,000 directly available via the site,” he says, noting that writers who have scripts on the Black List site can apply to all these opportunities at no additional cost. “For comparison’s sake, that’s twice as much as the Nicholl Fellowship does. That’s more than 10 times as much as the Austin Film Festival offers.”

He continues, underlining that the Black List’s mission “is to find the best writers and make sure that opportunities are there for them.… If you have a fire script and you think you can direct it well, you should submit it.”
