The venerable hotel has hosted the Academy Awards and served as a filming locale for numerous movies.

“Not a lifeless monument of stone and marble; it is as beautiful, as colorful, as vibrant as the city with which its destiny is linked,” trumpeted the newspaper report on Oct. 1, 1923. Opening a full two months ahead of schedule, the Biltmore Hotel was the culmination of a plan by J.

F. Sartori, president of the Security Trust and Savings Bank, who had convinced dozens of other local businessman that Los Angeles needed a luxury hotel to match the city’s rapid growth. A site overlooking Pershing Square at Fifth and Olive streets was chosen, and the noted Biltmore Hotel chain paid the then-unimaginably huge sum of $15 million for a 25-year renewable lease. The building itself was estimated to have cost around $4.5 million , and was designed by New York firm Schultze & Weaver in the Spanish-Italian Renaissance style with a Beaux Arts influence.Visitors and guests still marvel at its murals, marble floors, wood paneling, frescoes, fountains, and chandeliers, and it is said you can find 1,000 “Biltmore Angels” everywhere from the carpet to the ceilings. When lit up the hallway and ballrooms glitter with opulence, and it was no surprise that a Zeppelin airship paid a visit in 1929, hovering overhead before landing at Mines Field . The crew and passengers stayed here overnight, and the hotel re-stocked the zeppelin’s kitchens before it floated away to continue its luxurious round-the-world journey. Another visitor who hovered outside the hotel was “human spider” Bill Strother, a stuntman who traveled across North America climbing up buildings for charity. Strother was fresh from the movie “Safety Last!” in which he co-starred and doubled for Harold Lloyd, and he thrilled the crowds below by standing on his head on window sills and balconies. The Biltmore has always had a strong connection to the movies, because the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences was founded over lunch in the Crystal Ballroom in May 1927, and MGM art director Cedric Gibbons sketched the design for the Oscar statue on a hotel napkin . Eight Oscar ceremonies were held in the Biltmore Bowl room in the 1930s and early 1940s, and in 1977 Bob Hope hosted the Academy’s 50th Anniversary here. Some huge black-and-white pictures from those ceremonies are in the Historic Corridor, which is lined with menus, posters, photos, and various souvenirs from the hotel’s extensive archives. The Biltmore became the “Sedgewick Hotel” in 1984’s “Ghostbusters,” the current lobby where the proton-packed heroes bagged their first slimy ghoul, and just some of the other movies that have filmed here include “Chinatown,” “Vertigo,” “The Sting,” “The Poseidon Adventure,” “Beverly Hills Cop,” “Splash,” “Bugsy,” “Forrest Gump,” “Spider-Man,” “National Treasure,” “Independence Day,” “In The Line Of Fire” and “Mank.” Sen. John F. Kennedy rubbed his head as he engaged in an early morning huddle with Gov. Abraham Ribicoff, right, of Connecticut, John Bailey, left, and his brother Bob at the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles on July 12, 1960. Bailey is the Connecticut state Democratic chairman. Host to politicians, dignitaries, and celebrities alike since the early days, the Biltmore was also the center for the Democratic National Convention in 1960, when John F. Kennedy addressed crowds ahead of his presidential win, while in 1964 four young musicians from Liverpool named John, Paul, George, and Ringo bunked down here.
