more voting strictures since 2020. Texas already had some of the most restrictive laws around voter registration options and absentee voting, but then Gov. Greg Abbott signed SB1 into law last year, putting even more restrictions on how and when voters cast ballots — particularly the voting methods disproportionately used by voters of color.
We must fight back against these attempts to undermine our democracy. That’s why people across the country will be gathering atin the coming days, including at least two in the Dallas area, to fight ongoing threats to our freedoms and our vote. Area resident Alicia Smith is organizing a rally at the DeSoto Government Center on Oct. 23. “We will not tolerate attempts by any groups or factions, elected officials, candidates, special interest groups, or other actors to disregard the will of the voters and try to override the results of a free and fair election,” says Smith. “We will fiercely defend our Constitution and our democracy from unlawful insurrection.
Our nation simply can’t afford more election interference, lies and sabotage. It’s time to take a stand for our democracy. Lisa Gilbert is executive vice president of Public Citizen.
