TheBigBangTheory's Mayim Bialik defends Bernadette's most annoying trait: her high-pitched voice. 'I do think it’s important to acknowledge in terms of representation... that’s not a voice you would normally associate with ‘That’s a scientist woman.’”

Mayim Bialik defends Bernadette's annoying voice on The Big Bang Theory. The CBS sitcom was already in its fourth year when it promoted both actresses to be series regulars on the show. Before them, however, Kaley Cuoco's Penny was the only female main character in the series. Since then, the group became good friends, especially as they collectively deal with their respective partners' issues.

Despite only becoming a primary character in The Big Bang Theory season 4, Bernadette's arc in the show progressed quite quickly. Initially starting as a Cheesecake Factory part-time waitress, she eventually became a full-time microbiologist at a big pharmaceutical company. Following a whirlwind romance with Howard , they got married, and by the end of the series, they already had two babies. Bernadette's signature trait in the sitcom, however, was her high-pitched voice.

“I do think it’s important to acknowledge in terms of representation, Melissa Rauch who played Bernadette, she was a character who played also a scientist. She played someone who works in the pharmaceutical industry but as a molecular biologist type. And I think it’s really important to point out that women with ‘voices’ like the voice that Melissa would put on, that’s not a voice you would normally associate with ‘That’s a scientist woman.

Bialik is a real-life neurobiologist like her role on The Big Bang Theory, so she understands how important it is for a more diverse female representation on the screen. It doesn't seem like it was intentional from CBS or the show's creators, Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady. Nonetheless, as Bialik points out, it's an important aspect of the show.

This is actually an aspect of The Big Bang Theory that's usually overlooked. It's no secret that the series had been criticized for being sexist, especially with Penny during the earlier seasons of the show. But over the years, it somewhat mellowed, which was perhaps also a reflection on the changing times. Even Cuoco said that she became empowered in terms of speaking up about her character being sexualized, especially when Bernadette and Amy became show mainstays. .
