The last two years have featured some phenomenal games, but the people that make them have had a rough time. Since 2021, over 34,000 people have been laid off in the industry, and this year, the Game Awards finally acknowledged them in a meaningful way.
has worked to become the video game industry’s version of the Oscars. Boasting celebrity cameos and live music, host and organizer Geoff Keighley invites hundreds of journalists and developers to Los Angeles for a look back at the year that’s just gone by, and to have a sneak peek at what the future has in store. It’s broadcast live so the world can watch along, and garners over 100 million viewers each year.
Geoff Keighley, an infamously apolitical figure in the industry who tries to avoid taking a stance as much as possible, surprised everyone this year. “When we created the TGA in 2014, I wanted to celebrate the people who devote their lives to entertaining and sometimes comforting or affecting us through video games,” he began.
The Game Awards still isn’t a perfect show, but it’s improved greatly, and this year’s iteration has set the stage for great things to come in the future.People often joke that the Game Awards is an advertisement first and an awards show second, and nothing proves the point more than the 30-minute pre-show that rattles through some of the accolades that are clearly deemed less important by the organizers.
He then further charmed everyone, gesturing with his hand at the teleprompter and mumbling that it should skip ahead, getting another laugh out of the crowd, before announcing Melinda Jurgens as the winner of the Best Performance for her turn as Senua inwhat he didn’t want to say. The funniest moment of all, though, was how much Ford and Baker dwarfed Todd Howard.
If there’s one thing Naughty Dog can do, it’s tell a story, so seeing the studio gear up for a new one was by far the best announcement of the night., a cyberpunk tale about a lost kitty traversing a decrepit city won Best Indie Game and Best Debut Indie Game at the Game Awards 2022. So it would seem a game all about felines would be a surefire win for this year’s show, butcertainly has all the tells of an AI project.
