The best way to combat self isolation blues? Pick up the phone:
Last weekend, sequestered at my parents’ house in the suburbs, I did something I’ve not done in a decade. I rang my best friend. Not because I needed her advice or because there was some meet-up looming that would be simpler to orchestrate by phone. I just rang to have a chat. She picked up, a little surprised. We used to do this as kids – her at her home, me at mine, on and on until we got told off for wracking up a bill – but we’d fallen out of practice.
I can’t drop by my best friend’s flat, though it’s 15 minutes away. Neither of us has the virus but we have vulnerable adults in our lives that we don’t want to endanger. So, missing her after weeks apart, I lay on the carpet in my family home like I used to when we were teenagers. I was in my pyjamas still, though it was deep into the afternoon. My dad had made me lunch and was probably going to make me supper.
At primary school, me and two friends used to call one another before bed, to coordinate our outfits for the following day. One of my trials as a kid was venturing downstairs to ring a friend, only to find that one of my siblings was hogging the phone. At boarding school, where I went aged 11, homesick girls would queue outside the communal phone box – there were two for 50 pupils – to talk to their parents for the first time in weeks.
