This Hawaii hike on Maui takes you up the valley, over waterfall pools and through a bamboo forest to see a 400-foot-tall waterfall.
Getting there is a commitment. It’s a long drive on the Road to Hana, plus an additional 12 miles to reach Kipahulu. From Kahului to the national park, the journey takes approximately four hours, but it can take longer if you decide to make more stops along the way. It’s worth sacrificing those other stops though, as tempting as they may be, because the waterfalls at the national park are worth seeing.
I first stop by the visitor center, which has exhibits. I learn more about the abundant natural resources and cultural history of the area. Outside on the deck, I see Hawaii Island, the “Big Island,” staring back at me 30 miles across the channel. I’ve heard of the many battles over this land between the chiefs of Maui and the chiefs of Hawaii Island. Now I have a clearer understanding of why.
