The best stuff at the L.A. Auto Show hides in plain sight.

Bruce Meyers, who introduced the Manx back in 1967, passed away in 2021 at the age of 94. Right before his death ownership of his small company that was slowly churning out Manxes passed along to a venture capital firm called Trousdale. That firm is controlled by Texas-bred, California-based investor Phillip Sarofim who also, kind of awesomely, owns the

raced in the Baja 1000 by Parnelli Jones. Sarofim injected enough capital into Meyers to rejuvenate the company and knock out this tasty variation on the Manx. It’s the Manx 2.0.Freeman Thomas, designer of the Audi TT and VW’s first water-cooled Beetle, smartly showed vast restraint in updating the Manx. The proportions and general shape are almost unchanged. But the lines are sharper, more pronounced in their angles, and beautifully executed.

Yes, it’s just a concept. Yes, it’s been shown before. But on the L.A. show floor, nothing caused retinal burn like the Genesis X coupe. The hood is absurdly long for a car with an electric powertrain – completely divorced from the conventional wisdom that hides the batteries under the floor and then keeps proportions tidy. What’s under-appreciated about this concept is how the designers have leveraged the lack or a tall engine to keep the cowl low and stretch the nose stiletto-like.

It’s tempting to imagine a future of anonymous electric travel pods built to government specification. But the future may instead include gorgeous hustlers like Genesis X. And fun rompers like the Manx 2.0. And maybe even saddle-worked old Fords and wide-body old VWs.
