It’s been a headline-grabbing commencement season, filled with student walkouts, canceled ceremonies and controversial remarks from a pro football kicker. Protests at university campuses around the world over the unfolding conflict in Gaza have disrupted campuses as thousands of students approached final exams. Some schools, like Columbia University and University of Southern California, canceled their main commencement ceremonies over “safety precautions.” At, Yale and Duke Universities, as well as Morehouse College, students turned their backs to speakers or walked out in the middle of graduation speeches.

In other cases, the content of the speeches themselves drew controversy. Attendees at the Ohio State University’s commencement ceremony booed social entrepreneur Chris Pan after he called bitcoin “a very misunderstood asset class.
