Not long ago, I was asked a straightforward security question: What’s one strategy companies and individuals can adopt to protect themselves from threats originating on the dark web? I suspect my answer surprised some people: Don’t even try.There have been so many online data breaches that it is fair to assume that, unfortunately, our personal information is available—likely several times over. It’s fruitless to chase our identity on the dark web. Instead, focus on protecting how it is used.
Other colleagues tell me they are now making decisions about who they do business with based on how much personal information they share with others. Companies that think customers aren’t reading their privacy policies may want to think again.Know your rights, and don’t be afraid to exercise them. Authenticate early and often. After you set up your account, when prompted to reprove your identity, do so. If you authenticate your identity and data early and often, you make it virtually impossible for a fraudster to hack your account. . If you must provide it, ask how it is protected. You are allowed to ask, “What are you going to do with it?” and “How will it be protected?”Online crooks are looking for whatever is quick and easy, so the goal is to make their lives harder. That’s why limiting the distribution of your data strengthens your identity defense perimeter and creates one fewer location where your personal information is stored.
