The Posh and Becks story is a distortion of the Cinderella legend, as triumph isn't the result of noblesse oblige, of being selected, but the result of middle class striving that Britain has long struggled to understand, writes Virginia Trioli.
If football immortal David Beckham ever wanted to move on from being an enduring pin-up, a multimillion-dollar brand, a devoted father, chief household cook and US major league soccer club owner, he could do worse than go into vaudeville.
And a quick side note, in case you're still rolling your eyes: Victoria Beckham is genuinely a very, very good fashion designer. Their accents stay fixedly middle class, although Posh acknowledges some burnishing of hers that befits her moniker. But Beckham does exactly what anyone who never had money, and ended up with vast amounts, always does: he buys houses, he buys cars, and he bought the kind of life that his parents could only dream of.Then they both got OBEs, vaulting to the top of the British hierarchy. And the Cinderella story was complete.
Posh was kind of right when she was talking about her family. She might not have been working class, but her family was hard-working, and entrepreneurial and successful… rather like that other daughter of a successful middle-class party-planning family who ended up marrying the heir to the British throne.
