DC releases a new poster for TheBatman to celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year, showing Bruce Wayne using lucky red envelopes as ninja stars.
The Batman has released a brand new poster to celebrate China's Lunar New Year. The Batman is the latest entry in the long-running DC superhero franchise. Coming March 4, 2022, the film will feature Robert Pattinson in the lead role, carving a different path from the DCEU's most recent iteration of the Caped Crusader, played by Ben Affleck, who will be appearing concurrently in 2022's The Flash.
The film will be another take showing the darker side of the character at the beginning of his crime-fighting career. When The Riddler begins killing people around Gotham and leaving his sinister clues behind, Batman faces his greatest challenge yet. He is forced to find help from unexpected directions when his family's connection to certain high-level crimes is revealed during the course of the investigation.
This poster is also doing double duty. The Chinese box office is a huge factor in big-budget blockbusters making sizeable profits and throughout 2021 the censorship board has been particular when allowing American films to screen in the territory. No Marvel superhero films from 2021 have played in China, including the box office-devouring Spider-Man: No Way Home, which was the first film in the pandemic era to reach $1 billion even without China.
Currently The Batman does not have an officially announced Chinese release date. It remains to be seen what overseas territories will screen the film, and whether or not this new poster moves the needle whatsoever. However, given that it's the first major superhero film of 2022, it is certain to do well domestically unless DC made a catastrophic misjudgment of public interest in the new project, which seems unlikely given the buzz around Pattinson's turn under the cowl. .
