Mondli Makhanya | The ANC's health compact signing fiasco reeks of bad faith
Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi said that he would sooner see the GNU collapse than compromise on the contentious parts of the NHI.In his state of the nation address in February, President Cyril Ramaphosa sounded so positive and excited about progress being made in the collaborative efforts of different segments of society during his time in office.
After the meeting, Ramaphosa reaffirmed his government’s “commitment to a dynamic partnership between government and business to foster South Africa’s economic growth and social advancement”. There was hope that, by the time the final signing happened, the wrinkles would have been ironed out by removing the references to the NHI, pending the resolution of the standoff in the courts or via negotiation.
Sama chairperson Mvuyisi Mzukwa charged that government was “forcing us indirectly to support the NHI. One thing that we do know for sure is that this behaviour is a symptom of an ANC that has not fully grasped that it has lost its monopoly on power. The losers will be the poor majority who mostly rely on the public health system for their health needs. Another casualty is the NHI itself.
