Filmmaker Ana Lily Amirpour belongs to a group of renegade directors that explores contemporary American Gothic through a reimagining of genre film.
expands on the filmmaker’s visual gifts for world building and atmosphere while combining her narrative passions for the regional ghost story and survival plot. The film begins with the titular Mona Lisa , a mysterious psychokinetic, escaping from an asylum in the swamps of Cajun country and landing in the lurid French Quarter of New Orleans, where she encounters Bonnie Belle , a world-weary stripper with a transactional attitude toward friendship.
“I’ve been called the mascot for outsiders,” she muses when we begin. “I just feel like being an outsider means you’re being an individual, and you are fully aware of it.” Like the protagonists in her films, Amirpour has always identified as a person between worlds. This is due in no small part to her family history. Her Iranian father and mother escaped the country during the revolution’s oppressive crackdown and relocated to England, where Amirpour was born in the seaside town of Margate.
