The Navy says the Nimitz-class carrier, which has spent 18 months in Bremerton, Wash., undergoing repairs and upgrades, will arrive midday.
The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt will return to its homeport of San Diego on Thursday after undergoing 18 months up maintenance, repairs and modernization in Bremerton, Wash., according to the Navy.
The nuclear-powered carrier, which was commissioned in 1986, is expected to arrive at Naval Air Station North Island at midday. The Navy didn’t provide more details about its passage into San Diego Bay. The 1,092-foot warship underwent many upgrades during its time at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard & Intermediate Maintenance Facility. The upgrades included retrofitting the deck system to handle F-35C Lightning II, a long-range stealth strike fighter.Thousands of the ship’s sailors moved to the Bremerton area during the overhaul. They’re now moving back to San Diego.
