No matter where one lives, one can longingly look at celebrity homes and appreciate the legroom
By Monday, New York, California, Philadelphia, and many more towns and cities across the country received the mandate: Shop for groceries, go to the pharmacy, walk in the woods, but otherwise, stay home for you and yours . It’s led to a collective restlessness not seen in history, or at least not documented to this extent, with selfies for the hell of it and updates more mundane than usual and so many videos of nothing in particular all with the same setting: one’s home.
Thanks to streamed meetings and happy hours, I’ve seen all my colleague’s ad hoc home offices and work-from-home outfits. I’ve seen all of my friends’—and all my friends of friends’—West Elm and Ikea furniture on Instagram and FaceTime. I have also seen the homes of so many celebrities. I’ve seen the nooks, the crannies, the bathrooms of their first, second, or third homes.
In fact, there’s a novel kind of stratification that has everything to do with square footage and whether or not one has a balcony. Those of us stuck in city apartments longingly look at neighbors who have roof access. Those apartment dwellers with roof access but no yards longingly look at suburbanites with a half acre to their name.
