Karla Sofia Gascon in the titular role of Emilia Perez

If there’s ever been a controversial race for the Oscar, it’s Emilia Pérez’s but, more specifically, Karla Sofía Gascón’s. The star of Jacques Audiard’s film – who’s nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award – has been campaigning hard for the statuette.

But, since both her and the film have come under scrutiny by the audience, situations and tweets have arisen that put Gascón in a tough spot. Accusations and declarations on her part have been alarmingly offensive and hurtful toward a wide variety of communities and individuals alike. If the Academy really supports the diversity the entertainment media constantly pushes to portray, they should set a precedent by rescinding Gascón’s nomination.Posts Karla Sofía Gascón Implied Foul Play From Fernanda Torres’ Team Close Whereas Emilia Pérez has come under fire for its problematic portrayal of the transgender experience and Mexican culture, the last few days have been critical for the film’s Oscar race. Last week, in an interview with Folha de S.Paulo, Gascón gave a troubling statement regarding fellow nominee Fernanda Torres. She firmly stated that a social media team working for Torres was virally pushing for negative reactions against both her and her film. And, while there was nothing but praise towards the star of I’m Still Here and her acting, there’s still the negative connotation of saying someone in her team is dedicated to tearing the competition down. For less than that, Michelle Yeoh was harshly criticized because of an Instagram post in which she commented on the lack of diversity in the Best Actress winners. Some detractors even asked for the nomination of the Everything Everywhere All at Once star to be taken away at the time. But, while similar in execution, the intent between Gascón and Yeoh’s posts is what sets them apart. Extremely Offensive Tweets From Karla Sofía Gascón Surfaced Last Week Making things worse, last week also saw the resurfacing of some of Gascón’s not-so-old and disturbing tweets. No minority was exempt from her rants. In general, there were Islamophobic attacks fueled by Muslim immigration and racist comments criticizing the diversity of Oscar ceremonies to the George Floyd protests. In particular, there were extremely offensive body-shaming tweets against Adele, and lesbophobic comments towards Miley Cyrus. Most of the tweets from the 52-year-old actress range between 2020 and 2022, so it was clearly not an error of teenage judgment. They reflect what she truly thinks of the diversity of races and religions that surrounds the world and the entertainment industry. It’s ironic considering she’s breaking ground for being the first openly transgender woman to be nominated in the Best Actress category. The Oscars Should Set a Precedent on Rescinding Controversial Nominees Controversial nominees have plagued the Oscars. People such as Woody Allen and Roman Polanski have been lauded by the Academy, even when the jury was still out on the abuse allegations against the first and when the latter was already charged with sexual abuse. Art can’t be separated from the artist. Transgressions of this caliber should trump the Academy’s fear of taking away nominations. More recently, Andrea Riseborough’s nomination – the same year as Yeoh’s controversy – was at risk of being rescinded. The tactics used to promote the film and Riseborough were questioned by the Academy, with a highly mediatic process taking place. With Riseborough’s nomination being retained, it raises questions about whether the Academy is too afraid of taking action on a nomination rescission. Gascón’s tweets made co-star Zoe Saldaña break her silence. By condemning any expression of intolerance, Saldaña demonstrated the weight of Emilia Pérez lies solely on her shoulders – both inside and outside of the film. Piling on the controversy, as of today, Netflix made the decision to remove Gascón from the publicity tour of Emilia Pérez. The situation has escalated to the length of her losing her distributor’s support, so this is the moment for the Academy to follow suit. Gascón’s rhetoric of forming part of a marginalized group is not enough to justify her actions. You don’t get a free pass just for being part of the LGBTQIA+ community, least of all when you have the audacity to attack members of that same community. There should be consequences for actions as offensive as these, and the Academy should act on them ASAP by rescinding Karla Sofía Gascón’s nomination.
