Agent Leigh Steinberg represents two AAF quarterbacks and believes the Alliance of American Football Is positioned to be a perfect feeder system to the NFL. But without the backing of the NFLPA, the league is destined to repeat the history of other football leagues before it.
Share to twitterOrlando Apollos head coach Steve Spurrier, right, talks with quarterback Garrett Gilbert during the second half of an AAF football game against the Arizona Hotshots Saturday, March 16, 2019, in Orlando, Fla. Garrett Gilbert’s NFL transaction history may be long on comings and goings but remains short on actual on-field experience.
Gilbert is also a perfect example of why his agent, Leigh Steinberg, maintains the AAF just might be a perfect feeder system for the NFL if the fledgling league can get a much-needed boost in talent from the National Football League Players Association. While the NFLPA did not have an official response to Dundon’s comments, a source told USA Today that the players association had concerns that the participation of NFL and practice squad would violate the current collective bargaining agreement that prevents teams from holding mandatory workouts and practices throughout the offseason.
“ job is to advance the interests of NFL players, but taken broadly, it’s in their interest to support the interest of players in total,” Steinberg said in a telephone interview last week. “Clearly, this league offers an opportunity for players to make it.” The XFL, which is set to make its debut in 2020 after 19 years of hibernation, could also provide a similar option, but Steinberg said that’s yet to be seen. World Wrestling Entertainment mogul Vince McMahon has provided an initial financial outlay of $100 million by selling off WWE stock to get the second coming of the XFL – which folded in 2001 after just one season.
“I’m just excited about this new chapter. You never really know what to expect and a lot of guys in the past, if something really didn’t work out, that was kind of it. And to be able to have this chance and put something on tape and give myself another shot, I’m certainly excited.”
