A breakdown of the characters in the Star Wars sequel trilogy who had their potential squandered the most, and why they were wasted opportunities.
The Star Wars sequel trilogy was far from perfect, but one of the biggest problems was how it squandered the potential of some of its cast. Star Wars: The Force Awakens introduced several new characters to the franchise, and it did a fairly good job at beginning the arcs for some of them. Comparatively, Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker drastically changed and concluded many of the main characters' stories.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT 8 Finn John Boyega’s character is easily the most notable example of a wasted sequel character. Ever since The Force Awakens teased Finn wielding Anakin Skywalker’s lightsaber, many expected him to take a central role in the franchise. Later on, The Rise of Skywalker teased Finn’s Force-sensitivity, but ended up not exploring it any further.
6 Rose Tico Similarly to Hayden Christensen, Kelly Marie Tran was given some of the most corny lines in The Last Jedi. Too many of the film’s messages and lessons rested on her to tell. Sadly, this led to an unfortunate amount of hate directed toward the actress—despite her just following the character Johnson had written. The Rise of Skywalker promised to give her a more heroic and less preachy role; but Rose’s role was reduced to less than two minutes of screen time.
4 Zorii Bliss Out of all the new characters that The Rise of Skywalker introduced, Zorii Bliss’ spunky and strong attitude made her an immediate fan favorite. Played by Keri Russell, Zorii helped give some much-needed backstory to Poe by telling the audience about his history as a Spice Runner of Kijimi. But despite her being a new strong female lead, her character's only purpose in the film seemed to be bolstering Poe’s.
