The one person who could slowly bring the NBA and China back together is the same person who has been their crucial link for nearly 20 years now: Yao Ming
NBA commissioner Adam Silver had a reason to celebrate when he made his customary preseason trip to Shanghai in 2017. It was his first visit to the league’s most lucrative foreign market since the Chinese Basketball Association had elected its new chairman: former NBA star Yao Ming.
“We were overjoyed,” Silver said then. “Because we have such a close personal relationship, I knew he would be somebody that I could work closely with on continuing to develop the game here in China.”
