Best for: Data nerds; serious auction buyers; watch journalists Not quite a pure marketplace, Everywatch nevertheless fulfills an important role for buyers and sellers of pre-owned timepieces as a data source.
Unlike the early days of the internet, access speeds are near-instantaneous, bandwidth is plentiful, storage is cheap, and computers—including those little ones in our pockets—areIn an instant, even a search for the world’s most obscure watch is likely to turn up a dozen hits with sellers across the world. Type in, and you’re going to be inundated with endless pages of listings.
When using a direct sales platform such as eBay or Chrono24, you have some buyer protection built in; when using a pure aggregator such as Watchrecon, you’re merely connecting to a listing on a separate forum and still need to go through the process, in most cases, of signing up for that forum and adhering to its guidelines. Be patient, be wary, and understand that it’s perfectly possible to get burned—especially if a deal seems too good to be true.
A couple pro tips from our editor, Allen Farmelo, who has bought and sold watches on eBay since 1995: Track reputable sellers. This is easy to do on eBay: You simply select to “save this seller” and their listings will be easily available to you. This is a key filtering technique. Another pro-tip is to “save search,” which will send you an email when a new listing with your criteria crops up . Farmelo also recommends using bidding bots, which are legal and easy to use.
As for buying from individuals on forums, this isn’t as frightening as it may first appear. Most forums do a good job of vetting sellers over time, some with formal feedback systems, and some just by reputation building and the recommendations of fellow users. Another upside of buying from forums is that you’re often dealing with likeminded collectors, and so trades and often a possibility. You might make new friends, as well.
