Charges Dropped In Rape Case That Shocked South AfricaThe National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has said insufficient evidence led to its decision to drop charges against 13 men and a minor linked to the rape, sexual assault and robbery of eight women in Krugersdorp, a mining town in Gauteng province on July 28, 2022. The horrific incident occurred near an abandoned mine in the area where the women were part of a crew, filming a music video. A total of 80 men were initially arrested in a major police sweep after the incident. Many of those arrested were believed to work as illegal miners, known locally as Zama-Zamas. The suspects - who are all foreign nationals - are still facing charges of the contravention of the Immigration Act in the Krugersdorp Magistrate's Court. The case sent shockwaves around South Africa and saw women's rights activists protesting outside the Krugersdorp Magistrate's Court against the high rate of gender violence in South Africa. "It is unacceptable that women and children in South Africa are still unsafe due to the high levels of domestic and sexual violence. Authorities must do much more to ensure that South Africa becomes a safer place for women and children and that they do not live in fear," said Shenilla Mohamed, executive director of Amnesty International South Africa.
