Learner drivers face a few changes coming in 2026

A series of amendments are being rolled out for UK driving tests - with the initial change taking effect from tomorrow. As part of the overhaul, drivers will be permitted just two alterations to their booking from March 31 2026.

Further modifications include motorists being permitted to amend only their own booking from May 12 2026 - and being able to relocate their test solely to neighbouring centres from June 9 2026. The DVSA will contact you via email before the new regulations commence. The correspondence will clarify the necessary steps. DVSA will utilise the email address you provided when arranging your test, reports Birmingham Live. The new regulations apply exclusively to car driving tests. They do not extend to other categories of tests. Number of changes allowed From 31 March 2026, you will be permitted to make just 2 modifications to your existing booking. If you've already exhausted all changes under the present regulations, you will be entitled to make 2 additional changes from 31 March 2026. Only utilise your restricted changes when your circumstances genuinely alter. If you modify more than one element simultaneously , this still registers as one change. Who can book your test From 12 May 2026, you will be required to arrange your car driving test yourself on GOV.UK. Your driving instructor will no longer be permitted to book it on your behalf. Who can manage your test From 12 May 2026, only you will be authorised to modify, cancel or exchange your own driving test. You will be required to verify that you are the learner who will be undertaking the test and consent to a new set of terms and conditions. From 12 May 2026, it will be illegal to alter, cancel or exchange a driving test on behalf of another person. Where you can relocate your test If you arrange a new test from 9 June 2026, you will only be permitted to relocate your test to any of the 3 centres closest to where your test is scheduled or the test centre you originally booked at on that current booking.
