Nobody wants to share the road with a 'FA74 NNY' or an 'SH74 TDD'
As the switch to the new '74' registration plate is set for September 1, it opens up fresh opportunities for those seeking a personalised number plate for their vehicle.
However, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency has banned certain combinations as they could be considered offensive. Online car marketplace Carwow revealed that the DVLA produces a list of prohibited plates twice a year - in March and September. This list includes letter and number combinations that reference crime, racism, politics, certain religious aspects, or any term deemed too rude for the road, insulting, inappropriate, or potentially offensive or embarrassing.
This means plates with specific suffixes, such as 'FA74 NNY', 'SH74 TDD' and 'BL74 WJB', will never see the light of day. The DVLA has clamped down on a range of number plates that could be seen as offensive or inappropriate, with references to the conflict in Ukraine such as NO74 RUS, EU74 WAR and FK74 RUS being prohibited.
On top of filtering out potentially offensive or controversial plates, the DVLA also sifts through new combinations for those that might fetch a higher price due to their appeal as nicknames or initials. Some of the most sought-after 'good' 74 registrations are then put up for grabs at the DVLA's auction.
