I attended the 2024 IEEE Magnetics Society TMRC conference at the University of California in Berkeley. The sessions I attended covered magnetic random-access memory , heat assisted magnetic recording and magnetic heads and media for hard disk drives. Following are some insights from presentations at that event.
Everspin said that they are currently shipping products with 28nm CMOS nodes and are working to provide products with smaller lithography features for higher densities. They are also working on faster access time and longer endurance products to replace SRAM and some DRAM applications, especially for last level processor cache memory. During the Everspin presentation they said that embedded MRAM is used in a BMW motorcycle and two electric cars from Lucid Air and Bugatti-Rimac.
In addition to the session on MRAM memory technology, I also attended a session on heat assisted magnetic recording given by Seagate Technology, who is currently shipping HAMR products for enterprise and data center applications with over 3TB per disk capacities. The heating allows recording on very small grained high coercivity magnetic media as the elevated temperatures from application of the laser lowers the media coercivity so it can be written with conventional write heads.
